Getting your school ready for statutory PSHE changes and the new Ofsted framework

As you know, Relationships Education and Health Education will be compulsory aspects of PSHE education in all primary schools from September 2020. The PSHE Association have just launched a set of handy explainer slides to help you and your school prepare for these changes.

This free-to-download presentation will help you to explain these developments to your senior leadership teams, boards of governors and other colleagues. It covers practical steps to take, guidance to have in place and resources you can use.

They also explore how PSHE education is likely to play a greater role under the new Ofsted inspection framework, particularly in evidencing ‘personal development’, as well as making a unique contribution to safeguarding. Going Live Online Resources

The popularity of live streaming is ever increasing and while it can be fun, exciting and provide opportunities for children, there are also risks to be aware of (read an explainer).

You can use the resources below, from ThinkUKnow, to have conversations with children about live streaming and help them to develop the skills to respond to risk safely:

1. #LiveSkills

Work with children aged 8 – 18?  Use #LiveSkills to explore the features of live streaming and the risks that children and young people can face on live streaming platforms.  You’ll find session plans and activities designed to help children:

  • Identify the type of tactics offenders use on live streaming platforms
  • Identify and respond to pressure and manipulation online
  • Develop the skills to think critically about the people they meet
  • Deal with issues that may make them vulnerable when live such as low self-esteem and confidence

Looking to develop these skills with younger children? Download and use Jessie and Friends, ThinkUKnow’s resource for 4-7s, to explore the tactics offenders use on different platforms in an age-appropriate and non-scaremongering way.

Children will also learn to identify who they can go to if they have a problem online.

2. New live streaming training module

CEOP ambassadors can download the new live streaming module, which is additional to the Thinkuknow Introduction Course.  It explores the specific risks presented by live streaming platforms, and how you and your colleagues can respond to them.

Exploring Cybercrime: KS3 Lesson Plans

Two free lesson plans from the National Crime Agency on the causes and effects of cybercrime, and how to avoid it. 
The National Crime Agency is aware of an increasing number of young people engaging in acts of cybercrime, often having been encouraged to do so by criminals in hacking forums or via online gaming. These two key stage 3 lesson plans explore the risks involved in committing cybercrime, and will help your students to recognise and avoid the techniques used to manipulate young people online.

PSHE education provides an ideal context for this learning, as it develops relevant skills such as decision making, risk assessment, ability to recognise manipulation and effective use of exit strategies, while providing key facts about cybercrime.

The lessons aim to help students:

  • recognise what cybercrime is, and its causes
  • avoid manipulation online
  • explain the effects of committing cybercrime for both the target and perpetrator
  • seek support and understand the positive pathways for young people interested in computing

Making Choices: Sex, Relationships and BBFC Age ratings

With the growth in film, video and website content — alongside technological developments in how and where people can easily access it — young people need increasing support to safely navigate the world of visual media.

This free PSHE lesson pack: ‘Making Choices: Sex, Relationships and BBFC Age ratings’ from the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) helps students to explore the impact of viewing different types of relationships in the media, make effective choices about the content they view and resist pressure to watch something they don’t want to.

The lessons promote risk assessment, decision making, self-regulation, resilience and media literacy and have received the PSHE Association Qualty Mark.

The resource includes three lesson plans and PowerPoints for Year 8 or 9 students, with supporting classroom materials, and detailed teacher guidance on how to ensure effective lesson delivery. The lessons will help students to:

  • Analyse age-ratings given to films and why these are important
  • Develop the skills to manage situations where young people feel pressure to watch something
  • Evaluate how relationships are portrayed in different media and the impact this can have on young people’s expectations about relationships
  • Develop the skills to manage and respond to challenging content in films or online

The first Daily Mile Challenge for 2019-20

London Marathon Events will be setting be six challenges throughout the year to help keep your children active and encourage them to participate in The Daily Mile.

Resources for these challenges are free for all schools registered for The Daily Mile and will give you everything you need to set up and run the challenge in your school, including an assembly and posters for your classrooms. At the end of the challenge you will be able to download a certificate and will have the chance to win £500 for your school to spend on equipment to keep your children active.

Your first challenge is called ‘London Loop’

The children need to run around 15 London landmarks by the end of this half term. Each day they complete The Daily Mile – 15 minutes of running or jogging at their own pace – is one step on their ‘London Loop’. You can choose where to start – just follow the Loop and run at least 15 times!

Remember, physical activity helps with your children’s learning – they will be more alert and more able to concentrate in class. They will also be fitter and happier – activity helps improve both physical and mental health.

‘Happier, Healthier, Longer’ Health Education Resource

The ‘Happier, healthier, longer’ lesson pack from Movember is designed to increase students’ understanding of issues relating to men’s and boys’ health — specifically exploring testicular cancer and mental health, and the PSHE Association has just granted it their Quality Mark for PSHE education resources.

These free-to-download lessons encourage students to challenge preconceptions about men’s health, both physical and mental, while providing the skills to discuss sensitive issues and access health services when necessary. Although focusing on men’s health, the lessons have been carefully designed to be inclusive for all students. Lessons aim to:

  • Challenge misconceptions about men’s health and identify common issues
  • Explain the importance of carrying out testicular self-examination
  • Identify a range of strategies to support mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • Provide factual health information on testicular cancer and guidance on self-examination
  • Improve confidence to access health services and seek support when necessary

The health education aspect of PSHE will be mandatory from 2020 and schools will be expected to cover mental health, emotional wellbeing, cancer and self-examination, so these resources provide timely support to do so effectively. Though launched to coincide with Movember, they can be used at any time throughout the year.
